Simplicity is your coolest friend. Think loose and easy (like my coolest friends). In a heat wave, clothing sticking to you is almost as bad as one of your bare limbs accidentally grazing one of your other bare limbs, causing a sweat fountain. Sorry to be gross, but we all know the hell of that. This is not the time to worry about accentuating your curves; it is about leaving a lot to the imagination.

DRESSES

I have a sleeveless A-line minidress in white cotton that I bring out when I can’t bear to wear anything else. Which is why I love it. It has a generous neckline and a single button fastening to the back, and it easily slips over my head and falls to my mid-thigh. It allows for ventilation and sits away from my body like a doll dress. If I lived in a consistently hot country, I believe it would be all I would wear. A-line dresses in mini, midi or maxi are summer saviors. I prefer shorter to get my legs out to hint at some kind of shape beneath, and even lower calves and ankles in a midi are more flattering, but if maxi is your preference then please go all the way. The clean silhouette of an A-line does what it needs to do and nothing else, which means it is a perfect canvas for a bold color or print.

If you would rather cover your arms, shirt dresses are a good alternative, but ensure that the sleeves aren’t too fitted and allow a little billow, or can be turned up easily without becoming uncomfortable. Many shirt dresses can become sack-like frumpsville quickly, so they benefit from a belt. If yours doesn’t come with one, tie a complementary cloth belt around your waist to see how it looks, and if it works then take the dress to a tailor to add belt loops. But on the hottest days, tie it slackly behind your waist to offer some shape without the clammy restriction of being belted in.

Bare your legs under the skirt, and choose a longer length if you aren’t comfortable getting your pins out. I know that bare legs and hot temperatures can lead to thigh chafing, so pop on some cycling shorts or longer SKIMS underwear to offer some protection.
